Hawaiian Humane Society

The Hawaiian Humane Society is the largest nonprofit, open-admission animal shelter in Hawaii. In May 2023, they unveiled the new Kosasa Family Campus at Ho'opili in Ewa, O'ahu. This triptych mural is dedicated to the founders of the Hawaiian Humane Society, the generous donors who supported the development, and the past, current, and future community of Ewa.

  • Left Panel

    • The Ewa campus is located in the Honouliuli ahupua’a, a subdivision of land that historically boasted intricate irrigation system of lo’i kalo (taro patches) and loko i'a (fishponds). Watered by the streams of the Wai'ainae Mountain Range, Honouliuli was once a river valley before western contact, abundant with agricultural crops and animals. King David Kalākaua, one of the founding committee members of the Hawaiian Humane Society stands at the forefront. The left panel pays homage to the original flourishing landscape of Honouliuli and leaders of the time.

  • Middle Panel

    •  Moving forward in history, the middle panel is dedicated to the field workers on the Ewa plantations in the 20th century. Along the Ewa Sugar Company Plantation's sugar cane patches and housing area, paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) and their cattle graze the Wai'ainae slopes. There is a horse-drawn carriage on a dirt road, referring to the early Society’s efforts to improve the livelihood of working horses.  Helen Kinaʻu Wilder, the founder of the Hawaiian Humane Society sits on her horse in the front. Beside her, Freckles, the Humane Society's cocker spaniel mascot is playing with kids. This panel shows Wilder's and the Society’s early mission of protecting both animals and children from abuse and educating the general public about proper animal care.

  • Right Panel

    •  Focusing on the Ewa community of today, the right panel is vacant of plantation crops and instead filled with housing. There is a modern Hawaiian Humane Society collection truck on a paved road. The Ewa Green Wall is shown in the background, and a wheel from the Ewa Sugar Co. sugar mill lies by the homes. Families play with their animals in a refurbished Ewa plantation neighborhood as a rainbow flies over the proud Ewa community.

Celebrahtees

Celebrahtees is a Hawaiian-themed restaurant that's located in the old Buzz's Steakhouse in the heart of central O'ahu. The owner asked that we, "make it look like you're stepping into someone's aunty's backyard."

Flora Galore!

Consisting of several indoor murals across nine walls, (with the largest wall being 21’x14’), the entire project took around a month to complete. The artwork is intentionally focused on native plants to Hawai'i such as the ti plant, the loulu palm tree, and the 'ulu fruit tree

This couldn't have been possible without the kokua and partnership of Akemi Santiago, my dear friend who's a Hawaii-born and raised multi-media artist currently based in LA.

Morio's Sushi Bistro

Morio's Sushi Bistro is a beloved sushi restaurant located in Honolulu and owned by Morio Arime. This 8.7' x 17' mural is inspired by sumi-e paintings and our shared love for the ocean and seafood.
